Dangling Modifier Comin Attcha in JUNE at CPR

Just when you thought it was safe to close the books and head to the beach to work on that rad tan of yours, the Center for Performance Research is lining up its New Voices in Live Performance Series. I am psyched that I am curating two evenings of featuring the stylish creative juices of Tess Dworman (who likes to move and stuff, ) West Coast bad boys John Burtle and Stephen van Dyck, and Panoply Performance Lab.

The show is FREE, Friday June 15 and Saturday June 16th in Greenpoint, BKLYN

Getting very excited to head back to Berlin for the Month of Performance Art organized by the wonderful Performer Stammtisch group! I had the honor of showing Hawk/Dove with them in February on my AMERICAN MESS tour on the same bill as the absurd, awesome and inspiring Japanese Living piece by the Reduction Group. Here we all are chatting after the show. You can tell I am freezing my butt off in the cold cold cold. Can't wait to see what these guys have in store for MPA. This time I'll be bringing back some Brooklyn folks with me, including Esther Neff and Brian Mc Corkle of Panoply Performance Lab and Valerie Kuehne and her rouge cello.

No Soul For Sale-Tate Modern Performance Still

Here are a few images from my performance on Saturday at No Soul For Sale at Tate Modern. I was working with Casa Tres Patios, an artist-run initiative from Medellin, Colombia. Last march, I spent a month as an Artist in Residence in Medellin teaching performance and movement techniques to students from the University of Antioquia. I also developed a piece called, "Amor Y Problemas" that was shown at Casa Tres Patios and later shown in New York at Exit Art as part of the Performance in Crisis Series during Performa 09.

For this durational piece, I sat still for four hours with a "crown" made out of a stove pipe and dyed red hot dogs balanced on my head. I cradled one raw blue-dyed chicken in my right lap and had another raw blue chicken perched atop my wooden staff.

These images were made by James Southworth, a videographer and musician living in London.

The Anxiety of Influence

On Saturday, March 24th I dressed as artist Marina Abramovic and sat with her for six and a half hours in the MOMA atrium.

This guerilla performance was unannounced and was titled, "The Anxiety of Influence."  Here are some of the things that I was thinking about during our session:

I went through so many transformations as I sat there. Initially, I wanted some rise out of her, some acknowledgement of my gesture. Then I wanted to confess, as if I had been a bad child. Then, I felt myself get so angry that I almost started to cry. Why was she so special and why was I so small and weak? The glory of the venue wore off rather quickly. At a certain point, I felt like we were locking horns. She leaned forward and so did I. I started aping her every little movement and I kept hearing myself say, “move over bacon, here comes sausage.” Then I would crack again. She’s so strong. I was intimidated. She is like a mountain. She is my hero. But I knew I could make it through the day. I was hallucinating all over the place. She looked like a baby to me at one point. I thought about how hard it is to let myself be loved, I wondered if she felt that way too. I asked her with my mind. I wondered what I wanted out of her, why approval from anyone was so important. I wondered if I really just wanted all of the people in the atrium to loathe me so I sat there and let them loathe me. I thought about my parents and that one day they will die and I will be devastated. I thought I was hallucinating the whole thing. I thought that performance art is a more wonderful experience than any drug ever. I wanted to pee really badly. I wanted a way in. I wanted my contacts to stop falling out of  my eyes. Every time I thought about leaving the chair, I got pissed at myself. I got pissed at her. I got pissed at the museum. I just got pissed. And damn it felt GOOD.
